Kailash Mansarovar Yatra Fire Horse Year: Mahakumbh of Kailash
By Holy Kailash Tours | Updated 2026
The Year of the Horse is only recognized once every 12 years. However, 2026 is a special case because it is a Fire Horse Year, a 60-year cycle in the Tibetan and Chinese calendars.
Tibetan Buddhists refer to the Mahakumbh of Kailash as the Fire Horse Year. Only 1966 was the last occurrence. If you don't make it in 2026, the next Fire Horse Year will be far away in 2086.
Here's how the cycle works:
- The Tibetan zodiac has 12 animals, with the horse as the 7th
- Each animal year cycles through 5 elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water
- Fire + Horse together creates a rare 60-year alignment
- This alignment is considered the most spiritually charged time to complete the Kora

Why the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra in the Horse Year Is So Special
If you're wondering about the spiritual aspect, one Kora in the Horse Year is said to be equivalent to 12 Koras in a regular year as far as spiritual merit is concerned. This is basically what makes the pilgrims decide to spend their whole lives revolving around this cycle. However, if you want to know the deeper reasons depending on your tradition, here they are:
For Buddhist: On the Tibetan lunar calendar, the Horse Year is associated with movement, strength, and transformation. One circumambulation equals 12, thus merging the lifetimes of spiritual endeavors into a single trip.
For Hindu: The horse (Ashva) is a symbol of Prana, the life force. Time-honored customs like the Ashvamedha Yajna portray horses as instruments of cosmic renewal and spiritual authority. Lord Shiva is also known as the energizer of dynamic cosmic energy, making Kailash especially meaningful during the Horse Year.
For all types of pilgrims: It is believed that completing the Yatra during this time not only purifies one's past karma but also cuts negative karmic patterns and brings blessings onward into future lifetimes.
The Cosmic energy is intensified in this year. If you miss 2026, you will have to wait more than ten years before the next Horse Year, and more than 60 years for the Fire Horse Year.
Brief Overview of Mount Kailash, Mansarovar Lake, and Kailash Parikrama
The world's three most sacred organs are the center of every Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. Sacred Kailash Tours plans every trip around them.
Mount Kailash (6,638 m)
Kailash is located on the distant western Tibetan Plateau in China's Tibet Autonomous Region, near the border of Nepal and India. Four of Asia's major rivers originate here: the Sutlej, Indus, Brahmaputra, and Karnali. In contrast to other peaks in the Himalayas, Kailash is not climbed at all.
Every faith that reveres it forbids it. The mountain holds a different significance for each of the four faiths:
- Hindus consider it the divine abode of Lord Shiva
- Buddhists view it as a sacred mountain for meditation
- Jains think that Rishabhadeva achieved nirvana at this place
- Bon followers believe that it is the spiritual center of the earth
Mansarovar Lake (4,590 m)
Almost adjacent to Kailash, the Mansarovar Lake is among the highest freshwater lakes in the world. According to Hinduism, Lord Brahma created it. This is why it is believed that a dip in the lake washes away one's sins and bad karma. The majority of the pilgrims will take a bath here before the Kailash Kora, treating it as their spiritual preparation for what lies ahead.
The Kailash Parikrama (Kora)
The Kailash Kora or Parikrama of Kailash is a 53 km peri-mountain walking circuit, at the end of which the pilgrim becomes one with the Lord. The circuit starts from Yam Dwar (Gate), about 6 km from Darchen, and the finishing point is at Zongdui.
- Day 1: Yam Dwar to DiraPuk (5,210 m) 17 km, 7 to 8 hours of hiking
- Day 2: DiraPuk to Dolma La Pass (5,630 m) to ZuthulPhuk (4,760 m) 22 km, 7 to 8 hours. Dolma La is the highest point of the entire trek.
- Day 3: ZuthulPhuk to Zongdui 12 km, approx. 5 hours with a downhill approach to the finish

Is It Mandatory to Do the Kailash Yatra in the Horse Year?
No. The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra remains sacred every year. Many pilgrims do it outside the horse Year and come back transformed. It's always accessible, always impactful. Still, during the horse Year, thousands show up - energy thickens on the path, prayers rise higher. A greater sense of purpose flows through the group. This contrast shows how different things feel across years.

Best Time to Visit Kailash Mansarovar in 2026
There are only a few months in the year when the Tibet region is open for pilgrimage.
Here's a clear breakdown:
April to June (Highly Recommended): The weather is pretty good, and the roads are mostly open. The most significant day of the 2026 season also lands in this period: the Saga Dawa Festival on May 31, 2026. It is the festival that commemorates the birth, awakening, and parinirvana of Buddha Shakyamuni. A large number of monks and pilgrims assemble at Kailash for prayers and rites. The spiritual significance of the trip is greatly enhanced by attending during Saga Dawa.
September to November (Also Excellent): Blue skies, fewer crowds than peak season, and wonderful autumn light on the Tibetan plateau. Ideal for those who want a peaceful time.
From July to August: the temperature is higher, but there is also a lot of rain. Paths become somewhat difficult, though the surroundings turn flourishing and green. Nevertheless, it is a decent time to go.
December to February: Skip this time. Due to heavy snowfall, the terrain becomes very risky, and most of the paths are closed.

Routes to Mount Kailash Yatra in 2026
Here are three main ways to reach Mount Kailash, each suited to different types of visitors.
1. Overland Route through Nepal (Most Popular) The cheapest and the most widely chosen option. The route starts in Kathmandu, goes to the Nepal-Tibet border at Kerung (also called Rasuwagadhi), then passes through Saga, and finally reaches Darchen, the place where the Kailash Kora starts.
- Length: 14 to 16 days
- Suitable for: Pilgrims who want to do the overland experience in its entirety, along with the scenic driving on the Tibetan plateau
- Budget: $2,800 to $3,500 approximately per person
2. Helicopter Route through Simikot (Fastest) First, fly from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj, then to Simikot, and next by helicopter to Hilsa near the Tibet border and from there continue by road to Kailash. Much less walking on the approach.
- Length: 9 to 12 days.
- Suitable for: Senior pilgrims, those with limited time, or anyone who finds long drives difficult.
- Budget: $3,900 to $5,500 approximately per person. Note: The weather is the main factor. Always plan for a few days of waiting.
3. Lhasa Cultural Route (Most Comprehensive)First, travel to Lhasa by air; after that, you can engage in sightseeing around the Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, and Sera Monastery, which will also give you time to get used to the high altitude. The journey to Kailash will be by car, going through Shigatse and Saga.
- Duration: 15 to 17 days
- Best for: Travelers who want to combine Tibetan cultural exploration with the pilgrimage
- Budget: Varies based on add-ons.
Holy Kailash Tours can customize any of these routes according to your timeframe, budget, and health condition.
Permits Required for Kailash Mansarovar Yatra 2026
This part is important to get right. Since Kailash is in Tibet (an autonomous region of China), foreigners require several permits:
- China group Visa (individual tourist visas are not granted for Tibet)
- Tibet Travel Permit (TTP)
- Aliens' Travel Permit (ATP)
- Military Area Permit for the Kailash region in particular
Indian nationals also need approval through the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) via an authorized travel operator.
Each pilgrim should make a reservation through a licensed tour operator. Holy Kailash Tours is responsible for the entire permit issuance as part of your package. As a matter of fact, permits may be issued only after 6 to 12 months of processing, so early booking is not just an option; it is a requirement.
How to Prepare for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra
Participating in the Kailash pilgrimage is not like going for a regular walk. The Dolma La Pass is high above at 5,630 meters, and getting used to the thin air is really something else, as everybody's body reacts differently. Having the right equipment and skills before you start will help a lot and even save you a lot of hardship.
Physical fitness: Begin working out at least 2 to 3 months in advance of your trip.
Physical Fitness
Start training at least two to three months before your departure:
- Cardio (running, cycling, swimming) to build endurance
- Leg and core strength training for uphill terrain
- Practice hikes with a loaded backpack
- If possible, do some high-altitude hiking beforehand
Acclimatization
- Arrive in Kathmandu a few days early and rest
- Avoid alcohol and caffeine in the first few days at altitude
- Drink at least three to four liters of water daily
- Consult a doctor about Diamox (acetazolamide) before the trip
What to Pack
- Thermal base layers and mid-layers
- Waterproof outer jacket and pants
- Warm gloves, wool socks, and a hat
- Sturdy waterproof trekking boots (broken in before the trip)
- SPF 50+ sunscreen, UV-blocking sunglasses, and lip balm
- First aid kit including altitude sickness medication
- High-energy snacks: nuts, protein bars, dark chocolate
- A good quality trekking pole or two
Mental Preparation
This pilgrimage really requires a mental aspect, too, as well as physical fitness. The area is far away from civilization, the weather can change at any time, and the mountain will set the pace. If you take the trip with patience and a willing spirit, it will have more meaning for you.

What You'll Experience on the Kailash Yatra
Pilgrims who travel with Holy Kailash Tours can expect:
- There is nothing like a photo of the imposing south face of Mount Kailash as one stands before it at Darchen.
- Besides walking at dawn or under the full moon, the shores of Lake Mansarovar.
- Crossing Dolma La Pass and leaving a prayer flag alongside thousands of others already left by pilgrims are some of the experiences.
- Besides visiting ancient Tibetan monasteries such as Chui Gompa (Chiu Monastery), perched on a hillside above Mansarovar.
- Long drives across the Tibetan plateau with views of distant snowcapped ranges.
- Quiet evenings at guesthouses in Saga or Darchen, sharing meals with fellow pilgrims from all over the world.
- Moments of silence that are genuinely difficult to describe afterward
Never miss the feel of Tibetan plateau wildlife, the sound of prayer flags snapping in the cold wind, and the lake's different colors at different times of day: these things will always be remembered by people after they come back home.
