Annapurna Base Camp Trek: A Complete Trekking Distance Guide

The first thing you have to be aware of when planning an Annapurna Base Camp trek is the true distance that you will physically walk during the whole trip. Being a well-established trek, it is a great choice, as you will be free to alter start and finish points with different routes and itineraries; that means the total walking distance can vary, really. In most cases, the traveler covers about sixty to seventy km per way in their trek and gets to admire the breathtaking views of the mountains. The Annapurna Base Camp (4,130 m) can be reached from the three little Himalayan villages of Chomrong, Bamboo, and Deurali by trekkers.

Apart from the distance, the author gives a detailed account of what a trek to the Annapurna Base Camp is like. The writer suggests some physical preparations you can do to get ready for the trek. A Holy Kailash Tours website is where plenty of knowledge about trekking in the region is provided. The web portal will list the different trekking distance packages.

How Many Kilometers Is the Annapurna Base Camp Trek?

Annapurnaibase-camp-trek-distance
"Annapurna Base Camp Trek"

Depending on the trailhead you choose and if you want to include the Poon Hill sunrise detour or not, the round trip distance would vary anywhere from 70 to 130 kilometers. This is the case even if the itinerary shows it as Annapurna Base Camp and Himalaya Base Camp, respectively.

We have deliberately made such a big range. A trekker who starts from Nayapul or Birethanti and finishes the full classic trail will walk about 110 to 115 kilometers. Then again, if you start your hike by car deeper to Jhinu Danda or Ghandruk, skipping Poon Hill, you can reach the same base camp in 80 kilometers.

None of these numbers is incorrect. You are just dealing with different experiences. If a website tells you only one figure and never asks about your route, take that information with a pinch of salt.

Annapurna Base Camp Trek Route Length by Starting Point

The roads to enter the Annapurna Conservation Area have changed so much over the last few years that the reasons why distance numbers are so different across the different books and blogs are because of that.

The old-fashioned route starts your hiking at either Birethanti or Nayapul with your legs. Trekkers who take the entire lower valley, then turn back through Ghorepani and Poon Hill, walk about 110-130 km total. That is one of the few Annapurna trekking routes in Nepal that is considered classic.

Now, a jeep track has been constructed to bring you even further. Taking a route either from Jhinu Danda or Ghandruk towards Chhomrong straight away brings the total to about 55-80 km. Why you're doing a short Annapurna Base Camp trek is that agencies will recommend it to you. You will be able to reach the same beautiful amphitheater at an altitude of 4,130 meters, except with the advantage of a bit less walking.

Number of Days and Daily Walking Distance

Annapurnaibase-camp-trek-distance
"Annapurna Base Camp Trek"

On average, Annapurna Base Camp trek routes last for 7 to 14 days, and the number of days is a much more important factor than the physical distance.

A 7-day trek from Jhinu Danda can only be a short one with a high rate because of such conditions, with daily walks of 10 to 15 km only. A 10-day Annapurna Base Camp trek from Nayapul. Then again, the long distance takes more time to do it, which mostly results in shorter stops and better adjustment for acclimatization. The 14-day trek has the extra nights; for example, a Poon Hill trip or a hot spring stop at Jhinu.

Walking distances per day usually range from about 5 km on the days of acclimatisation to 16 km on the longest day, the downhill trek from Phedi to Bamboo. You may find that a quality guide for the Annapurna Base Camp trek will always recommend that you focus on hours and elevation, not just kilometers.

The Annapurna Base Camp Trek vs. the Annapurna Circuit

Travelers looking for the Annapurna trek distance usually end up here by mistake, since their intended Annapurna Circuit would have been located at a much greater distance. We should clarify this here to avoid confusion.

A one-day walk to Annapurna Base Camp consists of going and coming back again into Annapurna Sanctuary, which is surrounded by such peaks as Annapurna I (Mount Annapurna or Annapurna One)Annapurna South, Machhapuchhre, and Hiunchuli. Annapurna Circuit trekking, then again, is the kind of trek that goes all around that large mountain and is quite different from the Base Camp trek. It also has an elevation of over 5,000 meters above sea level, and the famous Thorong La Pass is to cross. It's drier, with high-altitude Manang and Mustang valleys on the route towards this great adventure.

Two more mix-ups that deserve a mention. Annapurna North Base Camp is a different trail from Annapurna Circuit, as it is quite a peaceful and remote one and can be done near Manang town. Usually, the term "advanced base camp trek" indicates mountaineering camps at 8,000-meter peaks outside the Annapurna region of Nepal; this specific trekking route is not being described at all.

Annapurna Base Camp Route, Elevation, and Time

"Annapurna Base Camp Trek"

The trail starts near the lower villages, at around 1,000 to 1,600 meters, and gets higher and higher to Annapurna Base Camp, up there at 4,130 meters, and it is the gain in height that really defines the nature of this trek as much more than just a matter of distance!

If your mind is only set on one fact, here it is: the base camp for Annapurna One, at what height level it has been placed, is 4,130 meters above sea level. It is Machhapuchhre Base Camp that is the penultimate big stop before the final push of your trek; that is the place at the height of 3,700 metres, which is 3 km away and is a 2-hour walk!

Beyond 3000 meters altitude, most guides will tell you not to go for elevation gains in a hurry but to keep them reasonable. The shortest possible route does not necessarily mean fewer days; you need the time to get acclimatized, and you have to give your body that!

Distance to Annapurna Base Camp from Kathmandu

Kathmandu is not the starting point. In this sense, this total route gets split into two segments: you have to first go from Kathmandu to Pokhara and then to the trail.

The road route from Kathmandu to Pokhara would be about 200 to 210 kilometers, which means you need a car to get there within 6 to 8 hours. If it is an option for you to take a flight, you would fly that stretch only with a 146-kilometer air route in 25 to 30 minutes. Many trekkers, mostly those who arrive by plane quite late in KTM, like to spend the first night at hotels in the Kathmandu city area before moving on to Pokhara.

You need to cover an additional 40 to 50 kilometers by road from Pokhara to the trailhead. So apart from the trek itself, you have to factor those few kilometers as the first leg of the walk. Making the decision between a flight or driving will mostly shorten (or lengthen) travel time rather than really altering the total number of kilometers.

Distance Between Pokhara and Annapurna Base Camp

Pokhara is actually the point where this trek begins, offering a shorter starting time than the trek to Everest Base Camp, which starts far off in Kathmandu.

Traveling by vehicle to either of the starting points of a walking tour like Nayapul takes you about 40 kilometers only. It is going another little way by vehicle, which gets you to Jhinu Danda or Ghandruk about 50 kilometers. Once you have got to your starting point, whether you start walking from Jhinu Danda or Ghandruk, the distance that your journey covers up to Annapurna Base Camp and the whole trip coming back will be in the range of 55 up to 115 kilometers, given the exact path you take.

A large portion of this base camp hiking in Nepal that happens around Pokhara is attributed precisely to the shorter nature of such treks, thereby getting more backpack travelers looking for a real mountain hike without having a whole three weeks free.

Jhinu Danda to Annapurna Base Camp

Jhinu Danda was once a rarely known area from which the trail begins as well as ends, but now, with improved roads, one of the first and the last places for trekkers is Jhinu Danda, where people go to relax and enjoy natural hot springs.

Moving from Jhinu Danda to Annapurna Base Camp on a circular path is roughly 55 to 80 km. According to whether a particular source gives a one-way or round-trip distance and whether the Poon Hill hike is included, these km ranges vary. Throughout the trail hike, it passes through places such as Chhomrong, Sinuwa, Bamboo, Dovan, and Deurali until finally arriving at Machhapuchhre Base Camp before reaching Annapurna Base Camp.

Most of the hiker community takes a rest, a sleep, or a hot spring soak in Jhinu Danda on their descent, one of the top facilities for a break on the entire path.

Chhomrong to Annapurna Base Camp

Chhomrong is regarded as the official gateway to Annapurna Sanctuary, where one can find the last village on the way, besides which one can choose from various teahouse accommodations before the trail gets narrower and goes through a forest and a glacial valley.

Gaining a 25- to 35-km one-way route is a common way of describing the length that trekkers usually do from Chhomrong to Annapurna Base Camp during one and a half to two trekking days, based on the speed at which one walks. Starting out on the trail after a steep downward drop out of Chhomrong, one has to gradually walk all the way back up through Sinuwa and a bamboo forest, which makes one actually ascend more than the distance indicated on the map.

On the way towards Jhinu Danda, the distance is only about 3 to 4 km with an elevation loss of a relatively gentle 390 meters, but one feels quite tired legs if the descent has been quite exhausting.

How Long Is a Walk to Annapurna Base Camp?

Rather than being measured in miles, most hikers cover 4 to 7 kilometers of trail in one day of trekking, leaving the longest ones around 7 or 8. The last stretch of the trail from MBC to Annapurna Base Camp only takes about 2 hours, and because the mountains start to narrow around you, it seems easier than it is physically.

Coming back down to Bamboo is the longest single day of the whole trek, frequently 6 to 7 hours, with most of the time spent going downhill on your tired legs. The total amount of time spent walking in a 10 to 12-day tour would accumulate around 55 to 65 hours walking the path, excluding the rest days.

What Makes the Distance Hard on ABC Trail

The mere number of kilometers will not do justice to the overall effort required on this hike, let alone a couple of other elements that bridge the difference.

A considerable portion of the trail, mainly near Ulleri and Chhomrong, is composed of stone steps, which are hand-carved, and they constantly keep the hiker going higher on the climb. A second challenge is the thin air at an average altitude of 3,000 m, which causes the same pace to take more visible effort. The weather of the valley of Modi Khola, which leads to the Sanctuary, is such that a moderate day can turn into a very long one if rain or snow delays the group, one reason why season and route both play major roles.

All of these reasons combined do not make a very hard Annapurna Base Camp trek. The trek is a moderate one only. But even "moderate" involves some real level of effort.

How to Prepare for the Distance of Your Annapurna Base Camp Trek

Incorporating your physical condition is key. If it's your first time hiking, then you won't get far just being a walking machine, so gradually increase your capacity to hike for 4 to 6 hours on rough terrain, preferably with a loaded daypack similar to the one you will have on the trail. Don't forget also to properly break in your hiking boots several weeks before you leave, as blisters can give a much greater headache than altitude will ever be able to.

Annapurna Base Camp is mostly accessible in March to May and September to November when the rains have stopped and the skies are clear. Most accommodation facilities on the trek to Annapurna Base Camp are teahouses; because of this, you don't have to carry camping gear.

On top of that, foreign trekkers also have to pay an Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) of around NPR 3,000. TIMS Card rules have changed more than a few times already, so be sure to find out the latest rules before you start travel. The whole thing will come out more or less as the size of the group you are with, the season, and the number of days it will take.

Our team at Holy Kailash Tours, each of the treks we design to include Holy Kailash Base Camp, always starts with the same groundwork that we do. Give us a heads-up on your physical level and the days you are available, and we will find you the route that suits it.
