Kailash Mansarovar Yatra 2026 Guide

Ram Sharan Adhikari

The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is one of the spiritual journeys in the Hindu world; few journeys carry as much significance as the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra does. More than just a trek, it is an ancient pilgrimage that has drawn Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, and Bon followers for millennia. Mount Kailash rises to 6,638 meters in western Tibet and is revered as an axis of creation by various faiths, while nearby Lake Mansarovar (4,590 meters) is one of the highest freshwater lakes on Earth and remains among Asia's holiest water bodies.

Holy Kailash Tours has been organizing Kailash Mansarovar Yatra pilgrimages from Kathmandu, Nepal, since 2010, so we know all the routes, terrain, permits, and altitude challenges associated with it - as well as its spiritual depth. Everything you need to know for planning the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra 2026 guide, from route options and costs to daily itineraries, packing lists, and fitness requirements.

What Is Kailash Mansarovar Yatra?

The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is a high-altitude pilgrimage to Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China, taking place every year since 1995. Pilgrims travel entirely from the world via Nepal or India into Tibet before undertaking the sacred Kora (circumambulation) around Mount Kailash, which covers 52 kilometers, then pass over Dolma La Pass at 5,630 meters on their journey into China to complete their pilgrimage.

Hindus consider Mount Kailash an abode for Lord Shiva; Tibetan Buddhists consider it the home of Demchok, a tantric deity; Jains celebrate it as the first tirthankara to achieve enlightenment there; Bon followers (an ancient religion of Tibet) revere it as a sacred land. All of these religions come together at the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, and pilgrimages are unlike any other.

Holy Kailash Tours organizes pilgrimages of all faiths on this pilgrimage journey to Kailash, whether they're devout Hindus looking to visit this holy mountain for darshan, Buddhist practitioners fulfilling longstanding spiritual goals, or simply spiritual seekers drawn by its energy; our trip planners tailor it all according to what matters most for each traveler.

Why 2026 Is an Ideal Year to Complete the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra?

Each year, pilgrims embark on the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra from May through November; it closes during winter due to inclement weather and snow on high passes. However, 2026 may prove an exceptional year, with permit quotas remaining open for groups departing Nepal via the Kerung Border.

Registration can fill up quickly for departures in June, July, and August - three of the most popular months. If you plan on traveling in 2026, start booking at least 45-60 days before your intended date; Holy Kailash Tours recommends even earlier booking for full moon departures, which tend to draw more pilgrims and may create border congestion.

Who Can Participate in Kailash Mansarovar Yatra?

This pilgrimage can be physically and mentally demanding. Altitude alone presents challenges. Add long driving days, high-altitude trekking, basic accommodation, and limited toilet facilities into the mix, and resilience will be tested! However, it remains one of the more accessible high-altitude pilgrimages worldwide, offering horse rental at key points along the route and vehicle support.

Age Requirements:

The Ministry of External Affairs' (MEA) guideline for government-organized Kailash Yatras is for people aged 8 to 70 years. Holy Kailash Tours can accommodate pilgrims outside this age range, provided they have medical clearance and are in good health. Please reach out to us with your specific situation for more information.

Health conditions to keep an eye out for:

  • Asthma: High altitude increases breathing difficulties; consult your physician and bring appropriate medication with you for optimal care.
  • Heart Conditions: Traveling to any cardiac event requires medical clearance from your provider; discuss with them whether this journey is suitable.
  • Diabetes: Blood sugar management becomes more challenging at altitude, so bring ample supplies of medication and test regularly.
  • Knee and joint issues: The descent from Dolma La Pass can be treacherously steep; trekking poles and sturdy footwear are recommended for safety.
  • High blood pressure: Altitude can further elevate blood pressure. Be vigilant and take any prescribed medications as directed.

Fitness Level Required:

While not athletic in terms of fitness requirements, pilgrims should aim to be reasonably fit before embarking on their Kailash Parikrama journey. In the months prior to your departure date, try building up to walking 5 to 7 hours on uneven terrain each day; particularly for Day Two of Kailash Parikrama from Dirapuk to Zuthulphuk via Dolma La, covering 22 kilometers at altitudes above 5,000 meters that takes 9-10 hours of trekking time; being unprepared on this day is one of the primary reasons pilgrims don't complete their Kora journey.

Practical fitness preparation:

  • Just before travel, start exercising regularly by walking or hiking at least three months before departure.
  • Practicing walking up and down inclines, as well as on inclines and descents,
  • Recommended. 3 to 4 times weekly cardiovascular exercise, such as cycling, swimming, or jogging, may also help.
  • Additionally, you could try breathing exercises and yoga.
  • Stay hydrated, if possible, in preparation for travel.

Acclimatization: The Most Important Part of the Journey

Acclimatization Is Key. Altitude sickness can strike anyone at any age; young, fit travelers as often as elderly ones. Gradual acclimatization, adequate hydration, and listening to your body are key to successfully combating altitude sickness.

Holy Kailash Tours incorporates dedicated acclimatization time into our itinerary at Kerung. Do not push yourself; rest, eat well, drink water regularly, and avoid alcohol during this day of rest and relaxation.

Symptoms of Altitude Sickness (Acute Mountain Sickness):

  • Headache,
  • Nausea or Vomiting,
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness, and
  • Fatigue out of proportion to activity is a symptom associated with headache.
  • Also, loss of appetite.
  • Difficult Sleep

If you experience difficulties sleeping, please notify your guide immediately. Most cases of mild altitude sickness improve with rest and hydration. If symptoms worsen, descent should be the preferred solution - our team always brings supplemental oxygen on each tour.

Altitude profile of the journey:

  • Kathmandu stands at an elevation of 1,400m.
  • Timure stands at 1,450m,
  • Kerung at 2,715m and
  • Saga 4,640m is all above sea level,
  • Lake Mansarovar is 4,590.1 meters above sea level with
  • Darchen at 4,596.0 metres;
  • Dirapuk stands at 5,210 meters while
  • Dolma La Pass, 5,630 meters, stands out further in elevation with
  • Zuthulphuk in between (4710 meters and 4,760 meters respectively).

The Kailash Parikrama (Kora): A Detailed Look

Lake Mansarovar: The Sacred Lake

Lake Mansarovar (sometimes misspelled Manasarovar ) is one of the most spiritually significant bodies of water in Asia. At 4,590 meters above sea level and covering an area of over 300 square kilometers, it stands out as both massive yet stunningly beautiful - on clear days, you can even catch a glimpse of Mount Kailash reflecting in its surface!

Hindu pilgrims visit Lake Mansarovar to purge themselves of sin and find freedom, while Tibetan Buddhists drink from its waters as part of spiritual merit-building practices. Additionally, Jains and Bon followers find significance in this lake.

Holy Kailash Tours integrates Mansarovar into every itinerary. Pilgrims often perform puja, take a ritual dip (even though the water can be extremely cold), meditate or pray along its shores, and witness sunrise over its beautiful pink-orange peaks as one of their most moving experiences ever.

The lake is fed by glaciers and springs but has no outlet. Its waters are considered so pure that pilgrims carry them home in small containers as a mark of respect. At certain times of year, its surroundings become home for migrating birds such as bar-headed geese and Brahminy ducks.

The Full Moon Kailash Mansarovar Yatra

Many pilgrims plan their Kailash Mansarovar Yatra specifically around the full moon. According to Hindu and Buddhist traditions, the full moon is considered an auspicious time when prayers and meditation can have greater power, while Kora merit is multiplied.

Holy Kailash Tours recommends booking well in advance if you wish to depart on a full moon departure, due to increased interest and long queues at the Tibet border and on the Kora trail. If a full moon departure is desired, Holy Kailash Tours advises reserving early.

The Full Moon Kailash Mansarovar Yatra

Many pilgrims prefer to plan their Kailash Mansarovar Yatra during the full moon. According to Hindu and Buddhist beliefs, the full moon is the time when spiritual energy is at its peak. During such times, prayers and meditation are believed to be more powerful.

The good deed one earns by doing the Kora around Mount Kailash is also believed to be doubled during the full moon. On the practical side, full moon departures are more in demand, and that can mean long queues at the Tibet border and crowding on the Kora trail. Holy Kailash Tours advises booking well in advance if you wish to depart on a full moon.

Major Full Moon dates for the 2026 Yatra season (May to November):

May 12, 2026

June 11, 2026

July 10, 2026

August 9, 2026

September 7, 2026

Guru Purnima, held every year around July, brings great fortune to Kailash Kora pilgrims and draws large crowds.

Accommodation During the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra

Accommodation on this pilgrimage varies considerably between Nepal and Tibet.

Here's a realistic picture of what to expect on your trip.

  • In Nepal,  Holy Kailash Tours can arrange upgrades to 5-star hotels in Kathmandu at an additional cost. Timure, Kathmandu, a 3-star hotel, offers standard amenities such as hot water, WiFi, and attached bathrooms with hot water available throughout. Holy Kailash Tours can arrange 5-star upgrades in Nepal upon request at additional costs.
  • Timure: Timure offers simple yet comfortable guesthouse-style accommodation. Usually, hot water will be readily available.
  • In Tibet, Kerung offers comfortable hotel accommodation with private rooms, attached bathrooms, and basic amenities; recent improvements have enhanced the facilities.
  • Saga: Provides simpler hotel lodging with attached bathrooms but limited heating.
  • Darchen: An affordable hotel near Kailash Kora, with improved facilities compared to previous years; however, don't expect luxury here.
  • Lake Mansarovar: Guesthouse accommodation offering very basic rooms with shared bathrooms and limited hot water availability but made more attractive by its picturesque setting.
  • Dirapuk and Zuthulphuk: These serve as basic guesthouses used during the Kora. Expect shared dormitory-style rooms, squat toilets, and minimal hot water; temperatures at these altitudes drop significantly at night.

On the Tibet side, all accommodation is on a shared-room basis; single rooms may incur an extra surcharge at certain stops.

Food During the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra

Holy Kailash Tours provides pure vegetarian meals during their Kailash Mansarovar Yatra pilgrimages due to the reverent nature of these pilgrimages, and most tour operators and pilgrims prefer this option for meals along the pilgrimage route.

What to Expect:

Kathmandu offers an abundance of Indian, Nepali, Tibetan, and international vegetarian cuisine. Restaurants around Thamel and Paknajol often cater well to Indian pilgrims.

On the road in Tibet, meals are simple but sufficient. You'll typically have:

  • Breakfast: Toast, eggs, porridge, or Tibetan bread, served with tea or coffee
  • Lunch: typically features Dal, rice, vegetables, and Chapati, with Soup/Noodles as options
  • Dinner: Similar to lunch, sometimes with soup and noodles

Altitude can affect appetite; don't neglect eating even when you don't feel hungry during the Kora. Your body requires fuel. Additionally, remember to drink at least 3 to 4 liters of water daily during your Tibet leg of the journey.

Holy Kailash Tours provide unlimited mineral water throughout their pilgrimage. Please don't drink from rivers or taps along your journey!

For optimal performance at altitude, always bring high-energy snacks from Kathmandu (such as nuts, dried fruit, energy bars, and chocolates).

  • Avoid alcohol during travel - particularly at altitude
  • Limit caffeine,  worsen altitude sickness;
  • Bring oral rehydration salts (ORS) for extra support with hydration.

Toilet Facilities on the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra

Pilgrims often ask about toilet facilities along their journey, and an honest answer is warranted here. While amenities on this route, particularly in Tibet, are minimal, being mentally prepared can make all the difference.

Kathmandu and Timure: Standard hotel facilities without issues.

In Kerung, Saga, and Darchen, however, Public squat-style toilets that may or may not be regularly maintained should always be carried with toilet paper, as unexpected complications may arise during cleaning.

At Lake Mansarovar, Dirapuk, and Zuthulphuk, Sanitation facilities can be very limited and often shared. Squat-style pit toilets with limited cleaning services may become overloaded during the peak season, when large numbers of pilgrims visit Dirapuk and Zuthulphuk simultaneously. They may become particularly smelly at these three places when many pilgrims pass through at once.

On the Kora trail itself, although there are few facilities, pilgrims often find refuge behind rocks to rest while trekking through high-altitude wilderness. Pack essential hygiene items before beginning this trekking adventure:

  • Toilet Paper Rolls (4 to 5)
  • Wet wipes (multiple packs)
  • Hand sanitizer in small bottles for ease of access)
  • Paper Soap Sheets
  • Sanitary Pads, Trash Bags Needed
  • Small trash bags (do not leave waste on the trail)
  • Personal Privacy shawl or lightweight sarong
  • Shawl or Sarong
  • Disposable Gloves (optional).

  • In Kathmandu: Full 4G coverage. Use either your home SIM with international roaming capabilities or purchase one upon arrival in Nepal.
  • In Tibet: When traveling to Tibet, your Nepal or international SIM will not work properly - to access this culture, you require a Chinese SIM card from Kerung, which Holy Kailash Tours assists pilgrims with. Please bring along your passport when purchasing one!
  • Network Coverage in Tibet: Saga, Kerung, and Darchen all boast reasonable mobile coverage, while Mansarovar and the Kora trail have limited or nonexistent connections - please inform your family before entering these regions that you could become inaccessible for up to two days at least.
  • WhatsApp and Other Western Apps in China: Many Western apps, such as WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, and Google services, are banned in China. If you need to communicate, WeChat (the most widely used messaging app) or call through your Chinese SIM card are effective options - be sure to download WeChat before leaving Kathmandu!

Travel Insurance for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra

Holy Kailash Tours strongly suggests travel insurance as part of their Kailash Mansarovar Yatra experience. We don't make this mandatory when booking with us, but traveling at high altitude in remote regions makes travel insurance an essential consideration.

  • At high altitudes, medical expenses such as hospitalization can lead to high bills.
  • emergency evacuation could run up to USD 10,000 without coverage (heli evacuation from Tibet can cost USD 10k+ without coverage);
  • Trip cancellation due to illness, injury, or other covered reasons could occur;
  • Lost baggage could also cause delays.
  • Personal Liability

Make sure your policy covers high-altitude trekking (above 5,000 meters) and helicopter evacuation - many standard travel insurance policies don't include such activities - read carefully!

Kailash-Mansarovar Yatra 2026 FAQs

1. Can Indians undertake the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra without using the government quota?

Indians can visit Kailash through private operators like Holy Kailash Tours without waiting for an MEA government quota to open. Private tours via Nepal routes are available year-round.

2. Are You Traveling the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra in September?

September is widely recognized as an ideal month for this pilgrimage, with the monsoon season having passed in Nepal, clear skies, good visibility of Mount Kailash, and smaller crowds than in July or August.

3. Are There Alternative Ways of Exploring Mount Kailash Without Doing the Full Kora?

Absolutely. Simply drive to Darchen and gain views from its base area without undertaking the entire Kora trek. Dirapuk on Day One of Parikrama provides wonderful vantage points as well.

4. What currency should I bring?

Indian rupees should suffice for Nepal expenses, while Tibetan expenses require Chinese Yuan. Holy Kailash Tours suggests exchanging money in Kathmandu, as exchange rates there tend to be better than at border crossings, and ATMs aren't reliable in western Tibet.

5. Can children do the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra?

Children aged 8 or above can technically undertake the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, though due to altitude, physical demands, and limited basic facilities, it may pose difficulties for some youngsters. We suggest consulting your pediatrician and us before bringing your children along for this adventure.

6. Are there Wi-Fi services in Tibet?

Some hotels in Kerung and Saga offer basic Wi-Fi services; however, its speed can be unreliable and untrustworthy; once out of Kathmandu it would be wiser to arrange communications according to your plans.

7. What should be my budget for personal expenses in Tibet?

Allow approximately 3,000 to 5,000 Yuan in your wallet for shopping, optional horse rental fees, SIM card fees, and any additional costs not covered in your tour package.

8. What will happen if I experience severe altitude sickness?

Your Holy Kailash Tours guide will assess the situation and if supplemental oxygen and rest do not help, immediately descend to a lower altitude or arrange evacuation (travel insurance with evacuation coverage is highly recommended in such instances).

9. Are pilgrims safe on the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra?

Every year, many thousands of pilgrims successfully complete this trek without incident. Holy Kailash Tours mitigates risks through careful planning, experienced guides, medical preparation, and sound decision-making on the route.

A Note on the Spiritual Significance of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra

All that has been presented on this page so far has been practical: routes, costs, permits, packing lists, and FAQs - but any exploration would be incomplete without considering what this journey means spiritually.

The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is not just another vacation; it is a pilgrimage. Over a thousand years ago, people began traveling on foot from all across Asia to reach this sacred site in Tibet - crossing deserts, mountain passes, and rivers without roads or guesthouses as they carried faith along their journey.

Dolma La Pass at 5,630 meters offers something special; something happens that's difficult to describe to those who haven't been there themselves. Pilgrims report feeling stillness, clarity, and the knowledge that they've arrived somewhere that matters on a deep level - whether from altitude, physical challenge, spiritual tradition, or the place itself, and they return changed by this experience.

Holy Kailash Tours is proud to be part of this journey for those who travel with us. We take our logistics very seriously as they make all the difference when traveling; cold, sick, lost, and hungry passengers can compromise the spiritual experience. It is our job to ensure everything runs smoothly, so when you arrive at Mansarovar or stand at Kailash, all you have to worry about is being present!
