Explore Mount Kailash Mansarovar with an Lhasa Pilgrimage

Mount Kailash is not just the name of another attractive Himalayan tour spot. For one thing, to Hindus, it is the mountain that houses Lord Shiva. The Buddhists view this mountain as a very sacred one and connect it with Buddhist traditions, and Jains and those who follow the Bon, an ancient practice, also revere this area as a very spiritually significant one.

To the side, you have the holy Lake Mansarovar, one of the most important pilgrimage lakes of the Himalayas.

Making the pilgrimage also means visiting Mount Kailash, but for many, it is the religious and spiritual value of being at this spot that also makes it one of the greatest journeys: doing the Kailash Kora, conquering the high Dolma La Pass, and hanging around at the side lakes of Lake Mansarovar.

It turns out the Kailash Yatra from Lhasa for 2027 travelers will have an added advantage through Kailash Yatra via Lhasa. You start from here, but not only that; you also have time to experience the culture of Tibet's heartland before heading to other holy places like the Tibetan Plateau, through to Shigatse, Saga Lake Mansarovar, and Darchen, where you will meet and visit the sacred spots.

Apart from that, the journey gives the traveler several days to get used to the high altitude before encountering the much higher sections of the Kailash Kora.

You know what time to get moving and when to stop, and this is what planning entails. You have to get together permits and arrange a visa, transportation, accommodation, and other details if you travel in a group, besides getting your physical condition in shape for the journey. Sometimes regulations change in Tibet, so your travel operator has to verify the rules for Tibet regarding your nationality and travel dates before you make any arrangements for the expedition.

Why go for the Kailash Yatra via the Lhasa Route?

Kailash Yatra via Lhasa
Yam dwar Ready Kailash parikrama with horse

You might be tempted to choose any route, but I recommend you to go Kailash Yatra via Lhasa. It is a well-travelled route for two main reasons: first, you have the pleasure of traveling across beautiful landscapes to Lhasa, where you get the experience of knowing Tibet through its culture and its people, and second, it is also the route of pilgrimage to the Himalayas so you can worship the holy Kailash.

Cultural exploration

To name a few: Potala Palace and Jokhang Temple. There is also one main street in Lhasa, namely Barkhor Street, where you can find a number of Tibetan stalls selling different types of handicrafts.

Better altitude preparation

Lhasa, located about 3,650 meters above sea level, is actually known to be quite a high-altitude city. If you spend some days there, you allow your body to start a kind of adaptation to the altitude before you go for the even higher regions of Kailash, which can reach up to very high elevations of, for example 5 630 meters (Dolma La Pass), which is almost twice the altitude of Mount Kailash.

Still be careful! These rest days, pace of travel, and the body's reaction to altitude determine if it is possible to cope with altitude illness or if it should be taken as a risk. Altitude illness is caused by the decreased oxygen partial pressure at altitude, and if you are not careful or if you don't rest, you are not able to cope with it.

A changing Himalayan landscape

The road from Lhasa to Shigatse, Saga and beyond crosses various types of landscapes. The cities, monasteries, plains, high mountains, etc. change the scenery quite dramatically throughout the journey, which is an advantage for the variety of sights you will experience.

One of the main attractions to see right after the trip is the Yamdrok Tso Lake. Later on, the landscape becomes more and more desolate as the vehicle travels towards the Kailash sacred region.

A complete Tibet experience

Instead of a direct flight to your destination where you just worship and then immediately take a return flight, the Lhasa route lets you go deeper into your Tibetan experiences. First, you can visit Tibet's spiritual sites, then go to the plateau, and finally arrive in the sanctified mountain region of Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar for your meditation.

Kailash Yatra via Lhasa 2027 itinerary

Kailash Yatra via Lhasa
Mount Kailash is in front of me

An organized Kailash Yatra via Lhasa route typically calls for about 15 to 16 days. Of course, the number slightly depends on the issuing of permits, transport, and the departure plan.

Day 1: Arrival In Kathmandu

Get to Kathmandu in the afternoon and check into your chosen hotel.

This first day also acts as a great opportunity for doing the initial briefing, document checking, and the preparation for the journey to the Tibetan capital.

Day 2: Kathmandu – Pashupatinath Darshan & Preparation; Altitude: 1,350 m | Walking: 2–3 hours

Leave this day open for documentation and visa-related work.
Passengers should be prepared to present their passport, photographs, and any other necessary documents as per regulations in force at country of nationality.

Day 3: Flight from Kathmandu to Lhasa – Gateway to Tibet; Altitude: 3,656 m | Flight: ~1.5 hours

Fly to Kathmandu from Lhasa. Brings mind-blowing views of the Himalayan range when the weather is clear.
Once arrived, meet the local team and transfer to the hotel.
Rest is the top priority. Lhasa being at such a high elevation, don't have your first night be like any other city stopover.

Day 4: Lhasa Sightseeing – Potala Palace & Jokhang Temple; Altitude: 3,656 m | Walking: 3–4 hours

Lhasa (per the sightseeing schedule): visit key historical sites in Lhasa. See the largest Potala Palace and old city area.
Trek carefully in the early morning. Walk slowly! Drink sufficient water! Do not rush.
In the remaining time of the sightseeing, proceed on sightseeing to Jokhang Temple, Barkhor Street, Drepung or Sera Monastery based on the final program.

Day 5: Lhasa to Shigatse via Gyantse; Altitude: 3,900 m | Drive: 6–7 hours

Leave Lhasa and go on to Shigatse. Yamdrok Tso: the view of the high mountains from the course.
The course depends on the road and the weather, but may take most of the day.
Shigatse also gives us another key acclimatization point before we go further into the plateau.

Day 6: Shigatse to Saga; Altitude: 4,450 m | Drive: 6–7 hours

Take the western road towards Saga. In the distance, the landscape changes - it looks very open and uninhabited, with only a few isolated houses and long stretches of plain, mountains, and fields belonging to semi-nomadic peoples. The travel itself plays a big role.

Day 7: Saga to Lake Mansarovar; Altitude: 4,590 m | Drive: 6–7 hours

Head further in the direction of Kailash and Lake Mansarovar.

This particular moment is very emotional for a lot of devotees as they witness it for the first time. With this sighting of beautiful Lake Mansarovar and the impressive mountains around it, the pilgrimage to one of Asia's holiest regions is complete.

Religious pilgrims can decide what rituals they like to do themselves as long as it is within their local customs and the environment..

Day 8: Mansarovar Pooja & Drive to Darchen; Altitude: 4,670 m | Walking: 2–3 hours

Experience the divine and spiritual aspect of Puja Lake near Laka Mansarovar at the same time. Darchen is the main starting point of the Kailash Kora.

Prepare your travel bag, outdoor equipment, and basic provisions for the next few days.

Your tour guide will elaborate on what follows in the coming three days. This includes a difficult crossing of Dolma La.

Day 9: Darchen to Dirapuk – Kailash Parikrama Day 1; Altitude: 4,900 m | Walking: 5–6 hours

Kailash Kora starts here. In the first hour of walking, you reach Darchen. Normally, the walking distance is about 13 km, but actual walking schedules may vary.

Day 10: Dirapuk to Zuthulpuk via Dolma La Pass – Parikrama Day 2; Highest Point: 5,630 m | Walking: 8–9 hours

Among the days of the Kailash Kora, this one is the most difficult.

The path winds past Dolma La, situated around 5,630 m above sea level.

The combined effect of the thin air, the cold and the wind, rugged ground, and a long walk are reasons that this part of the trail takes physical effort.

Once the pass is behind, one turns for Zuthulpuk along the road. At this point, proper preparation is really a question of life and death.

Even if you possess peak physical fitness, high altitudes affect everyone differently. Always monitor your body closely. In case you get severe symptoms of altitude sickness, inform your guide as soon as possible

Day 11: Parikrama Day 3 Zuthulpuk- Darchen to Saga  Altitude: 4,670 m | Walking: 7-8 hours

At first, walk a short distance, then meet the vehicle to continue to Darchen, before the final drive to Saga after a short rest in Kora.
The last walking segment in Kaliash Parikrama from Zuthulpuk is completed here.
After meeting up with the vehicle, the drive takes us from Darchen to Saga. During the Kora, you will be resting and regaining your strength at the hotel.

Day 12: Saga to Shigatse; Altitude: 3,900 m | Drive: 6–7 hours

Moving across the Tibetan Plateau, we head north towards Shigatse, while enjoying the ever-changing scenery of the landscape. Our journey includes meal stops and rest breaks in between.

Day 13: Shigatse to Lhasa; Altitude: 3,656 m | Drive: 5–6 hours

Driving the last stretch of our travel, we enter Lhasa's beautiful valleys and landscapes.

Once arrived, you can check out of our hotel and also get some rest before meeting our tour leader, who will make our next day's plan for us.

Day 14: Flight from Lhasa to Kathmandu; Altitude: 1,350 m | Flight: ~1.5 hours

Making a stop at Lhasa's airport for your plane ride back to the capital of Nepal.
Upon arrival in the city that is the last destination point, you will be picked up from the airport and brought to your hotel. Then enjoy a rest, which you definitely well deserved and which will be the best way to start your recovery from the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra.

Day 15: Departure from Kathmandu

Leaving from Kathmandu for your further destinations is an easy thing to do; you just wake up, have your breakfast, and get transferred to the airport.

What are the required permissions to obtain for Kailash via Lhasa?

Kailash Yatra via Lhasa
Lhasa City from capture  Potala place

This is the most important part of Kailash Yatra planning.

Foreign travelers cannot just come to Tibet and then self-travel to Mt. Kailash. The reason is that Tibet, the middle of Asia, has organised travel and permits for foreign guests.

Currently, travel information states that the Tibet Travel Permit is necessary for foreign travelers, and the Kailash and Ngari Area still require other permissions.

Tibet Travel Permit

The permit documentation section is incredibly vital but currently formatted poorly. Group it under clear subheadings:

  • Tibet Travel Permit:
  • Chinese Group Visa:
  • Aliens' Travel Permit
  • Military Area Entry Permit:

China visa or applicable group visa arrangement

Visa fees for China or relevant group visa plan will also depend on your nationality and the current Chinese visa regulations.

Foreign visitors who are entering Tibet from Nepal will probably be asked for a Chinese group visa in Kathmandu, following the applicable laws for their country and travel date. The official guidelines in 2026 mention that the group visa issuance process in Kathmandu takes about three to four working days. Yet, travelers are advised to check whether the rule remains the same after the departure date.

Aliens' Travel Permit

One of those travel-allowed places is the Ngari region, with additional travel authorisation for Mount Kailash.

Military Area Entry Permit

Kailash Mansarovar yarta are in non-open places. Because of this, extra permission is needed to get into the Kailash area.

Tibet travel guides now say that in the Ngari region, extra permits will be needed.

The key is obvious: do not presume the one Tibet permit covers the entire Kailash tour. Your operator should verify the full permit set for your specific trip.

Is Kailash Yatra via Lhasa difficult?

Yes. That said, you are not required to be an expert mountain climber. What you should do is take altitude very seriously. The major physical challenge is not the overall length. It is the high altitude level.

Lhasa is situated around 3,650 meters, which is quite high. Then, the trip keeps going higher and higher, so when you reach the peak of Mount Kailash and complete Kora, you'll have already passed Dolma La at a height of around 5,630 meters.

Sometimes, the 3-day KORA involves walking for quite a long time over the rough ground. Having a smart training plan includes such things as regular walks, hills and mountain trail practice, and doing cardio workouts before you get started. Mountain hiking may be most helpful if you already live in or near a mountainous area.

Also, a word or two about traveling with altitude: consult your doctor beforehand about such a high-altitude trip, mainly if you have pre-existing conditions or have been to places with very high altitudes in the past that you did not enjoy so much.

What Is the Most Favourable Time for Kailash Yatra via Lhasa in 2027?

Kailash Yatra via Lhasa
At Mount Kailash, beautiful scenery

The primary Kailash Yatra and pilgrimage season is during the warmer months, mostly from April to August, when the roads are relatively passable, and the traveling conditions at a higher altitude are more favourable.

Please keep in mind that your actual travel dates for the month and the day (exact day) for 2027 should be selected based on the operating season, road conditions, availability of the permits, and the festival/pilgrimage calendar.

The high altitude environment is a little unpredictable, and the Kailash weather at least can swing rapidly from one extreme to the other. Even in a relatively mild season like May, the days are warm but nights can get cold.

Do not select the travel days merely because the day-to-day calendar offers the opportunity. Plan for a time when the entire trek is going to be open, and your trekking company is able to get all the permits for you.

What Things Should Be Packed for the Kailash Lhasa Route Yatra?

Get your backpack ready for both the city sightseeing and the trekking at high altitudes.

You need to be all bundled up in light, warm clothing, have a waterproof jacket, wear trekking shoes that are not tight, bring warm socks, gloves, a warm cap, and some sunglasses.

Bags should be a backpack type only, which does not cause discomfort. This helps keep you free for the entire Kora. You should carry all necessary items, your own drinking water with some snacks, and a bottle of sunscreen beside you. Also, keep some of your warm items on hand in case it gets cold.

In high-elevation areas, sun exposure is quite intense, and protection is very much needed due to UV radiation.

Packs of your main bag must remain light because the trip encompasses various hotel changes and long driving hours.

Kailash Yatra via Lhasa 2027 Cost

Kailash Yatra via Lhasa
Lhasa samey Monastries with Locals

Ultimately, the pricing is dependent on the number of travelers you have, accommodation standard, route permits, transportation, visa requirements, and the services that are included in the package.

When you are comparing packages of several tour operators, do not focus only on the main price; you have to also make sure that the price quoted covers the cost of Tibet permits, hotel accommodation, transport, meals, a guide, airport transfer, sightseeing, and Kailash Kora (circuit around the Mountain) arrangements.

Also ask what is a package not including. Visa expenses, personal items insurance, emergency evacuation, extra stays because of delays, and other personal costs may be handled differently by operators.

So, those joining the Kailash Yatra via Lhasa 2027 Holy Kailash Tours tour should be sure to request the newest quotations since permit-related expenses and administrative fees could be adjusted before the start of the season.

Why Book the Lhasa Route Early for 2027?

The Kailash Yatra via Lhasa Route is one of the few that still offer the option of getting there by land. There are still some old-fashioned types around who prefer this to getting on a plane and jetting across the sky. That said, if you are one of them who still enjoys going the hard way, the Kailash Yatra via Lhasa Route is quite an option. But why not go ahead and plan your journey to Mt. Kailash for 2027 now?

The trip to Kailash demands additional planning besides an ordinary visit to Tibet

Your tour operator needs plenty of time to collect your passport copy, to make and prepare your permit application, to schedule transportation and accommodation, and to organize the visa procedure if needed.

Getting prepared in your mind before the actual journey is quite an effective way of having everything ready physically to face the journey.

But here is yet another: ** Mt. Kailash** is a destination where one shouldn't build up an itinerary by connecting flights tightly. The changes in weather, road conditions, permits, and the work of the government can all interfere with the schedule.

How Holy Kailash Tours Manages the Kailash Travel Plan

Kailash Yatra via Lhasa
Sunries Views at Mount Kailash

Holy Kailash Tours mainly works to handle all those activities of the pilgrimage before the travelers actually leave Kathmandu.

Its staff handles everything from getting Tibet documentation done to arranging transport, accommodation, guide arrangements, and the travel schedule plans for the Kailash region.

Visitors are advised to understand in detail what is included in their tour package and what expenditures they have to bear extra and beyond the package.

As this is a pilgrimage journey that requires physical strength for many altitude, being properly organised is an important factor. Having great details in a written plan for the trip is far less than what is needed on the ground: weather permits the altitude schedule, and the physical movement of the group all need to align perfectly with one another.

Is Lhasa Acclimatization Enough for Mount Kailash?

Kailash Yatra via Lhasa
Mount Kailash

The answer is no.

Still, many people consider a Lhasa stay before the Kailash trek as the only means to acclimate themselves.

Yet, it is just the opposite. Spending two or three days in Lhasa can only give your body a chance to start adjusting to the altitude. It still cannot protect you against altitude sickness.

What matters is that throughout your hiking trip, the altitude keeps rising.

At the height of the Kailash Kora, it will exceed the altitude level of Lhasa, and you can get really high at Dolma La.

As such, it's very important to be careful with pacing the journey, and it's equally important that the traveler should report these signs of distress to the guide: very severe headaches, unusual breathlessness, confusion, total weakness, or nausea that is getting worse.

Better to stay at altitude and gradually get used to it.

What Makes the Kailash Kora Different From a Normal Trek?

The Kailash Kora is not a usual mountain trekking route, but rather a very holy pilgrimage circuit.

In this context, many pilgrims walk a physical distance not as an ordinary hike, but for a specific religious reason. Some repeat a mantra or prayer all the while, others make certain traditional gestures, and some remain in a silent, peaceful state, taking it all in, literally.

It is a challenging route with difficult and very harsh landscapes as well as high altitudes.

The summit point, Dolma La, can pose a challenge even for those in very good health!

This means one must go through not only a physical strain but also a religious experience.

The fusion of such elements turns out to be why of the difference between the Kailash trip and just any other normal holiday trekking in the Himalayas.

Final Reflections on Kailash Yatra via Lhasa 2027

The Kailash Yatra via Lhasa is, in itself, a great spiritual, cultural journey and also a physical adventure into one of the most remote & holy regions on earth, the mountainous landscape of sacred pilgrimage of Tibet.

The pilgrimage is a journey starting from Kathmandu, flying towards Lhasa; you adapt to the altitude gradually, traverse across the Tibetan Plateau, and finally touch the holy places of Lake Mansarovar and Mount Kailash.

Then comes the Kora. Three lengthy day walks. One difficult pass of Dolma La. Large portions of walking at high elevation. And, to many devotees, a profoundly inner change that they carry with themselves well after going back home.

Planning and being well informed is the key.

Begin the permit process well in advance. Look up the visa requirements based on your nationality. Be physically fit in advance. Educate yourself about altitude sickness. Do not hesitate to clarify what exactly is included in your package.

Mainly, find an organizer that respects and upholds the sanctity of the pilgrimage of Kailash, treating it as a serious high-altitude pilgrimage and not just another tour package.

The Kailash Journeys can facilitate Holy Kailash Yatra travellers with 2027 planning documentation, transportation, and pilgrimage to Kailash Yatra via Lhasa, departing from Kathmandu.
