What is the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra?

plan-kailash-yatra-from-nepal
Scenic view of Mount Kailash peak against a clear blue sky in Tibet, a holy destination for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra pilgrimage.

Kailash Mansarovar journey trek refers to the pilgrimage to Mount Kailash (altitude: 6, 638 m) and Lake Mansarovar (about 4, 590 m) located in far western Tibet's Ngari region. Four traditions treat this place as holy. Hindus believe it is the home of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Buddhists link it to Demchok, a form of Buddha. Jains say their first Tirthankara, Rishabhdev, reached liberation here. Followers of the Bon faith call it the centre of their spiritual world.

Nobody climbs the peak of Kailash to this day. What we can do is the Pradakshina, the Kailash circuit, also called the Mount Kailash Kora, a walk of about 52 km around the base. Many pilgrims believe one circuit clears the sins of a lifetime, and a dip in Mansarovar cleanses the body and mind. You don’t have to share that belief to feel the weight of the place. Most people go quiet when the mountain first appears.

Why choose the Nepal route for the Kailash Mansarovar tour?

You can reach Kailash from India through the Lipulekh Pass or Nathu La Pass, or from Nepal. The Indian government yatra operates with fixed batches and a short season. Kailash Mansarovar Yatra from Nepal is operated by private operators, giving you more departure dates, more route options, and a greater likelihood of aligning the journey with your work commitments, your health needs, and your family priorities.

Indian passport holders, NRIs, and foreign nationals all access the Nepal side. Kathmandu is also the place where your Tibet group visa and Tibet travel permit get handled, so the city becomes your base for a few days before you cross. Pilgrims often add a visit to Pashupatinath Temple before they go north, and we think that’s a good habit. It slows you down at the right moment.

Choose Your Kailash Yatra Route from Nepal

plan-kailash-yatra-from-nepal
A tourist vehicle driving along the winding mountain roads of the Tibetan Plateau toward Mount Kailash.

Trade route from Kathmandu to Kailash overland via Kerung.

This is the overland trip from Kathmandu via Tibet to Kailash. The route crosses the border at the Kerung (Gyirong) border (called Rasuwagadhi on the Nepalese side) or Kodari Nyalam. It then proceeds onto the Tibetan plateau by towns including Saga and Paryang en route to Lake Mansarovar and the base village for Darchen (the starting point for the circumambulation of Kailash).

The huge advantage is acclimatization. You're gaining altitude gradually over several days, so you'll have the luxury of time to acclimatize. The cost is time. Overland trips usually run about 12 to 14 days. The roads are long, the hotels are basic, and some days you’ll sit in a vehicle for hours. Pilgrims who can spare the days almost always do better on this route.

The helicopter route via Simikot and Hilsa

The Kailash Mansarovar helicopter tour from Nepal is shorter. Fly from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj, next morning Nepalgunj to Simikot in the far west, then by helicopter to Hilsa on the border. After crossing into Tibet, you drive to Purang (Taklakot) and continue toward Mansarovar. Total trip length is often 8 to 10 days.

Here’s the catch. You climb fast, so altitude hits harder. And Simikot is famous for weather delays. A clear morning in Kathmandu means nothing if the cloud sits on the runway at Simikot. Ask any operator how many spare days sit in the itinerary. If the answer is none, think twice.

Kailash Mansarovar Yatra via Lhasa

For a more comprehensive spiritual experience, you can choose the route Kailash Mansarovar Yatra via Lhasa. This route takes pilgrims to Lhasa and other places in Tibet before proceeding to Mount Kailash.

You may visit Lhasa, Shigatse, Saga, Lake Mansarovar, and Darchen on your standard trip.

This way may incur extra costs, as visitors might spend a few days visiting Tibet before getting to the Kailash area.

Best time for Kailash Mansarovar Yatra

plan-kailash-yatra-from-nepal
Panoramic view of Lake Mansarovar with its turquoise blue water during a clear summer day in the pilgrimage season.

The season runs from May through September. Beyond those dates, snow and cold seal off the passes and most businesses close. At the time of this guide, the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra 2027 is the goal.

The mornings in May and early June are fresh, and the skies are crisp and bright. Several pilgrims try to reach Saga Dawa, the Buddhist festival around the full moon of the fourth Tibetan month, normally sometime in May or June. It's impressive, but getting there gets busier and costlier. July and August coincide with the monsoon in Nepal, so landslides can hold up the border road, but it's generally arid on the Tibetan plateau. September is stable and calm, and the autumnal glow on the waters of Mansarovar is unmatched.

Opening dates are determined by Tibetan authorities and are subject to change. We confirm the dates with our Tibetan partners before we open any batch. Make sure to confirm the dates before you book flights!

What you feel on the Kailash journey day by day

A standard overland yatra starts with two nights in Kathmandu. Meet your group, sort your passports and permits, and get a pre-departure briefing from the tour leader. Don't miss the briefing. It’s where people ask the questions they were too shy to ask by email.

The drive north changes the scenery fast. Green hills turn into dry, wide, empty land with a huge sky. After immigration at the border, your group usually spends a night or two at a lower Tibetan town to let the body settle. Headaches and poor sleep are normal on these first nights. Drink water, walk slowly, and don’t try to prove anything.

Arriving at Lake Mansarovar with clear weather, the water is turquoise to dark blue and the ancient, snowy Kailash looks white at the horizon. Pilgrims perform a puja and a havan on the shore, enjoy a bath if the weather is fine, and remain for a day or two. A darker lake, Rakshas Tal, is adjacent, and it has a very different feel.

Three-day Kailash Circuit Trek

plan-kailash-yatra-from-nepal
Pilgrims walking along the Mount Kailash Parikrama trail with colourful Tibetan prayer flags fluttering in the foreground.

The Kailash Kora is the hardest and most meaningful part of the trip.

First Day trek from Yama Dwar, the traditional gateway to the mountain, approximately 12 km to Dirapuk, where you'll have an overnight stay with your back to the north face of Kailash. The first day is less steep than day two, but high altitude makes flat ground feel steep.

Day two is the main challenge. Climb to Dolma La Pass at around 5, 630 m, the highest point on the route. It's cold, the air is thin, and each step is a challenge. Prayer flags adorn the summit. Then a descent past Gauri Kund to Zutulpuk, where you're often exhausted, sometimes a little weepy. Day three is a straightforward walk out to the road and return to Darchen.

Rent ponies, porters, and yaks to do parts of the walk if you can't do the entire circuit. Book them in advance as they can get booked up during high season. Some pilgrims only attempt a partial Kailash darshan, not the entire circuit, but nearly everyone later expresses regret at not completing the full circuit.

Story: Our Kailash Mansarovar Yatra guide,  Hari Adhikari, with a group of 45 US citizens on a Kailash Mansarovar tour led by Anil Sharma. Guide Ram Nepal helped the group, directed the group during the Kailash Mansarovar tour, and also assisted the pilgrims during the circumbulation of Dirapuk and Dolma La. Guide Hari Adhikari helped the group travel together and ensure their well-being in high-altitude conditions.

Kailash Mansarovar permits, visa, and documents

The Chinese Government put strict rules in place for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra before planning to go to Tibet. Every International Traveller needs a valid passport with more than 6 months' validity + Normal Visa from the Chinese Embassy. As Tibet is an autonomous region, you'll require a Tibet Travel Permit (TTP) and an Ali Region Military Permit, which is only obtainable through a legally registered Travel agency. Independent / self-travel is strictly prohibited.

If you're an Indian passport holder, the system is a bit different: your paperwork and visa should be obtained via the Foreign Affairs Office (FAO) or the China India Pilgrimage Service Centre (CIPSC) and will likely be a group visa. Whatever your route through Nepal, you'll also need to obtain a Nepal multi-entry visa. These documents aren't issued instantly, so plan to book your agency at least 4 to 6 weeks before you depart.

Kailash Mansarovar Yatra cost from Nepal

plan-kailash-yatra-from-nepal
Scenic view of Mount Kailash peak against a clear blue sky in Tibet, a holy destination for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra pilgrimage.

The cost of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is influenced by route, size of the group, time of the year and standard of the hotels. Helicopter flights are disproportionately costlier than the overland journeys. Smaller, private groups are more expensive than large, shared groups. Peak prices are charged for departures around Saga Dawa.

What's included in a fair package will be Kathmandu-based accommodation, all transportation inside Tibet and Nepal, permits, and visas, an English- or Hindi-speaking leader, a Tibetan guide, tour meals, a few emergency oxygen cylinders, and a Tibet-based bed. There will be no assistance with flights to Kathmandu, porters, mules, insurance, and personal costs. Make sure it's written in your contract.

Beware of excessively low prices. If one operator is charging way below the others, then something's missing, often permits, safety equipment or even hotel standards. Make sure you get a detailed list of what's included and excluded before leaving a deposit. We prefer to answer 10 questions now than hear about an issue in Dirapuk.

Fitness, altitude, and health

plan-kailash-yatra-from-nepal
The steep, rugged mountain trail of Dolma La Pass at 5,630 meters altitude, decorated with numerous traditional prayer flags.

The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is a high-altitude journey; you should prepare yourself for walking the Kailash Kora. Morning walks, hiking, doing exercises, and training for rain and sudden weather changes can be the best way to go for it. The Kora, or Parikrama of Mount Kailash, at low oxygen levels at Dolma La Pass, at 5630 meters of altitude, will be tough, and walking can be hard at such high altitudes. You should practice or plan to do some walking, light hiking, cardio exercises, etc.

Medical checkup before Mt. Kailash Yatra Before you embark on the journey with us, do have a medical checkup with your doctor, mostly if you've some health issue. Awareness of the symptoms of altitude sickness. Keep yourself well hydrated, maintain a healthy diet and plan your schedule properly for acclimatisation. Kailash Mansarovar Yatra Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu; 1,400 meters

Welcome to Nepal! Arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport, Kathmandu. Our representative will receive you and transfer you to the hotel. The rest of the day is kept free to recover from travel fatigue. In the evening, there will be an introductory briefing covering the overall journey, route conditions, altitude awareness, and important do’s and don’ts. This is also a good time to meet fellow pilgrims. Dinner at the hotel.

Day 2 Kathmandu – Temple Visits and Yatra Preparation

After breakfast, visit Pashupatinath Temple, one of the holiest shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva, to seek blessings before beginning the yatra. Continue to Boudhanath Stupa, an important centre of Tibetan Buddhism. The afternoon is reserved for yatra preparation, document verification, final packing, and optional shopping for cold-weather gear. A detailed health and safety briefing is conducted in the evening. The Yatra leader will brief you thoroughly regarding the issues and travel plans.

Day 3: Kathmandu to Syabrubesi (Drive); 1,460 meters; 6- 7 hours

Depart early morning for Syabrubesi, the gateway to the Nepal–China border. The scenic drive follows rivers, terraced hillsides, rural villages, and winding mountain roads. Lunch is taken en route. Arrive in Syabrubesi by evening. A short walk is recommended to stretch the body after the long drive. This is a small town which is bustling with the Yatris, trekkers, locals, guides, and porters. Stretching our legs by visiting a temple uphill and in the town will keep us active.

Day 4:Syabrubesi to Kerung (Border Crossing) 2,700 meters 4-5 hours

After breakfast, drive to the Rasuwagadhi border. We will complete exit formalities on the Nepal side and enter the Tibet Autonomous Region. After immigration procedures, we continue driving to Kerung. This marks the first significant altitude gain of the journey. The rest of the day is kept light for acclimatization.

Day 5: Acclimatization Day at Kerung

This full day is dedicated to acclimatization. Pilgrims are encouraged to take short walks around the town to help the body adjust to altitude. Our team monitors health conditions and guides hydration, breathing, and rest. This day plays a crucial role in reducing the risk of altitude sickness in the coming days.

Day 6: Kerung to Saga (Drive) 4,640 meters 6–7 hours

Today, the journey enters the vast Tibetan Plateau. The drive offers breathtaking views of snow-covered peaks, wide open grasslands, and nomadic settlements. Lunch is served en route. On arrival in Saga, pilgrims are advised to rest and avoid exertion due to the significant altitude increase. Oxygen support is available if required. Make sure that you are frequently in contact with the trip leader and always present your health status. From this day onwards, we are in the place which is risky in terms of altitude sickness.

Day 7: Saga to Lake Mansarovar 4,590 meters 6–7 hours

Finally, we will reach the first place which we intend to go on this amazing Kailash Mansarovar Yatra Overland tour. We will drive towards the sacred Lake Mansarovar, one of the highest freshwater lakes in the world. En route, weather permitting, pilgrims may catch their first distant glimpse of Mount Kailash. Arrive at Mansarovar in the afternoon. Perform holy rituals, meditation, and prayers by the lakeside. If you are doing the special puja ceremony on the lake then today is the day to do it. The serene surroundings create a deeply spiritual atmosphere.

Day 8: Lake Mansarovar to Darchen 4,575 meters 2–3 hours

Today’s drive is short towards the base camp of Mt. Kailash. Early morning is reserved for spiritual activities at Lake Mansarovar, including holy bathing (if weather permits) and prayer rituals. After breakfast, we will drive to Darchen, the base camp of Mount Kailash. The remainder of the day is spent resting and preparing for the Kailash Kora.

Day 9: Darchen to Dirapuk – Kora Day 1; 12 kilometers; 4900 m; 5-6 hours

After an early breakfast, we drive a short distance to Yam Dwar, the official starting point of the Kora. Yam Dwar symbolizes the “Gateway of the God of Death,” marking the spiritual threshold of the parikrama. The walk today is relatively gentle, following the Lha Chu River along a wide valley. Pilgrims enjoy stunning views of the western and northern faces of Mount Kailash. The landscape is filled with prayer flags, mani stones, and sacred landmarks. We will reach Dirapuk Monastery by afternoon, offering a magnificent close-up view of Mount Kailash’s north face. In the evening, we will reminisce the day’s 1st Kora and rest for yet another day of Kora. Tomorrow is going to be the hardest. So, we go to bed early.

Day 10: Dirapuk to Zutulpuk via Dolma La Pass – Kora Day 2; 22 kilometres; 8- 9 hours; 5,630 m

This is the most challenging and spiritually significant day of the yatra. Start very early in the morning. The ascent to Dolma La Pass is steep and demanding, requiring slow and steady walking. At the pass, prayer flags flutter in strong winds, and pilgrims offer prayers for strength and blessings. Crossing Dolma La symbolizes spiritual death and rebirth. After the pass, we descend carefully to Gauri Kund, a sacred lake associated with Goddess Parvati and we continue the long descent through rugged terrain to Zutulpuk. Despite physical exhaustion, pilgrims often describe this day as the most transformative. You can feel the spiritual vibe while doing this longest Kora Day.

Day 11: Zutulpuk to Saga – Kora Completion; 8 kilometers; 10 hours (Trek + Drive) 4640 m

We will complete the final section of the Kora, which is relatively easy and flat. After reaching the endpoint, we will board the vehicle and drive back to Saga. We will celebrate with fellow Pilgrims for our successful completion of the sacred yatra. The evening is spent resting and sharing experiences.

Day 12: Saga to Kerung

We will begin the return journey through the Tibetan Plateau. The gradual descent helps the body recover from high altitude. Arrive in Kerung by evening.

Day 13: Kerung to Kathmandu

After breakfast, we cross the Nepal–China border and continue driving back to Kathmandu. Arrive by evening. A farewell dinner is organized to mark the successful completion of the yatra. You will be presented with the certificate of trip completion by the Holy Kailash Tour Official.

Day 14: Final Departure

Our airport representative will bid you farewell at the airport with a promise to meet again.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra from Nepal safe?

For people in reasonable health who prepare properly and travel with an experienced operator, it's considered manageable. It's still a high altitude trip in a remote area, so the risk is never zero.

How many days does the yatra take?

Overland journeys are approximately 12 to 14 days. Helicopter journeys are approximately 8 to 10 days, depending on the weather.

Can senior citizens do the yatra?

Many pilgrims in their sixties and seventies finish the journey, often using ponies for the parikrama and following a slower pace. Medical clearance is required first.

Can I travel to Kailash without a tour operator?

No. No. Visitors must travel with a licensed guide and group while in Tibet, both foreigners and Indians.

What's the difference between the Nepal route and the Indian government route? Are they called the same thing?

The Nepal route is managed by private operators, offering more departure dates and greater flexibility. The Indian government route operates on a fixed schedule, uses a lottery system for seat allocation, and has a shorter travel season.

What's the best month to do the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra in 2027?

The main season for the Kailash Yatra usually runs from May through September, and June, July and August tend to be the popular picks since travel conditions are relatively good then. Plenty of pilgrims also go for the Kailash Mansarovar Full Moon Yatra 2027 because of what it means religiously.

How much does the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra from Nepal cost in 2027?

What you'll pay for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra in 2027 comes down to your route, your nationality, the accommodation you pick and how big your group is. Overland, helicopter and Lhasa packages are all priced differently. For current prices and what's included, get in touch with Holy Kailash Tours.

Do I need a visa and special permits for the Kailash Yatra?

You do. That means the right Chinese visa or whatever entry authorization applies to you, a Tibet Travel Permit, and any other regional permits that are required. It all shifts depending on your nationality and the route you take, so your tour operator is the one to walk you through the paperwork and arrangements.

How hard is the Mount Kailash Parikrama?

The Mount Kailash Kora is hard work, mainly down to the altitude and those rough mountain trails. The toughest stretch is Dolma La Pass, sitting at about 5, 630 meters. Get physically ready, acclimatize the right way, and keep an even walking pace

Can I do the Kailash Parikrama on a horse?

Yes, horses can sometimes be arranged for pilgrims who aren't able to walk the whole Kailash Parikrama trek. Pony availability depends entirely on seasonal demand and real-time trail conditions, and where horses can actually go all vary. And some sections, especially around Dolma La Pass, you've to walk, so having a horse doesn't take away all the physical effort.

What sort of accommodation do you get on the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra?

That depends on which route you take. In Kathmandu and Nepalgunj you'll usually get comfortable hotels, but once you cross onto the Tibet side it's basic hotels and guesthouses. On the Kora itself, pilgrims stay at Dirapuk and Zuthulpuk, where things are simple, and toilets may be shared.

What should I pack for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra?

Bring warm thermal clothing, a waterproof jacket, trekking boots, gloves, sunglasses and sunscreen. Don't forget your own medicines, a water bottle and all your essential travel documents. A comfortable daypack, a power bank and trekking poles come in handy too on a high-altitude Kailash pilgrimage.
