The Mount Kailash Lake Mansarovar Yatra is a spiritual journey to the roof of the world for millions of people, where Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati live.  It has attracted devotees from Hindu, Buddhist, Bon, and Jainism traditions. Holy Kailash Tour Pvt. Ltd is delighted to present to you the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra Overland package.

The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra starts from Kathmandu, takes 16 days, and will take you to the holy Mount Kailash and the sacred Mansarovar Lake in remote western Tibet. Hindus believe Lord Shiva resides there. Buddhists see it as the home of Demchok. Jains call it Astapada. For the Bon tradition, it's the seat of all spiritual power. Whatever brings you here, one thing is true: this is not a normal trip.

The Kailash Mansarovar tour is a 16-day overland journey that starts in Kathmandu and takes you deep into western Tibet, crossing the Nepal-Tibet border at Timure-Kerung. You'll visit Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar, two of Asia's most sacred sites. At Holy Kailash Tours, we've been organizing this journey for years, and we've seen what a difference good planning makes.

Why You Should Do the Kailash Mansarovar Tour in 2026?

Kailash-Mansarovar-tours-complete-guide

Two strong reasons. And both actually matter.

2026 is the Year of the Horse

Every 12 years, the Tibetan calendar marks a Horse Year. This year is considered one of the most auspicious times to complete the Kailash Kora. According to Tibetan Buddhist belief, one Kora in a Horse Year carries the merit of 13 Koras done in a regular year. That's not a travel marketing claim; it's a deeply held spiritual belief that draws thousands of pilgrims from across the world, specifically this year.

If you've been putting off this trip, 2026 is the year to stop waiting.

Better infrastructure than 2025

The Kailash Mansarovar tour resumed in 2025 after a long gap. That first year back is always a bit rough. Permits take longer, logistics need smoothing out, and routes get tested again. By 2026, things should be more settled—clearer processes, stronger support systems, and a more predictable journey overall.

The Overland Route: Why It's the Best Way to Go?

There are a few ways to reach Kailash and Mansarovar. You can fly into Lhasa and travel overland from there. You can take a helicopter for a shorter trip. But the overland route from Kathmandu via Kerung is what Holy Kailash Tours recommends for most travelers, and for good reason.

  • The gradual altitude gain gives your body time to adjust
  • The risk of altitude sickness is lower compared to flying directly to a high altitude
  • You travel in a comfortable tourist bus, not a crammed transport
  • The scenery through Nepal and into Tibet is genuinely stunning
  • You get more cultural context before you arrive at the mountain

Kailash Yatra Trip Highlights

  • Sacred pilgrimage to Mount Kailash, revered by Hindu, Buddhist, Jain, and Bon followers

Kailash-Mansarovar-tours-complete-guide

Here's our full day-by-day plan. We've designed this itinerary around real acclimatization needs, not just logistics.

Day 01: Arrive Kathmandu (1,300 m). We pick you up from the airport and transfer you to the hotel.

Day 02: Tibet Visa Application. Visit the Chinese Embassy to apply for the Tibet Group Visa. The rest of the day is yours.

Day 03: Kathmandu Temples Tour Visit Pashupatinath Temple, Guheshwori Temple, and Bouddhanath Stupa with one of our guides.

Day 04: Receive Visa and Prep. Pick up your Tibet Group Visa. Visit Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple)—final shopping and packing.

Day 05: Drive Kathmandu to Timure (165 km, 1,760 m, 6-7 hours). Good road for most of the route. Gets hillier toward the end. Beautiful mountain scenery throughout.

Day 06: Drive Timure to Kerung (40 km, 2,900 m, 3 hours) Border crossing at Timure. Our team handles the paperwork. Change vehicle on the Tibetan side and head to Kerung. Rest for the remainder of the day.

Day 07: Acclimatization Day in Kerung. We drive or hike to a higher elevation and return to the same hotel. This is one of the most important days of the trip. Don't skip it.

Day 08: Drive Kerung to Saga (230 km, 4,640 m, 5-6 hours) Big altitude jump, but Day 07 helps. You'll cross a long tunnel and pass Peluk Lake.

Day 09: Drive Saga to Mansarovar (447 km, 4,590 m, 8-9 hours). Early start. Cross Meiyuma La Pass (5,211 m) and pass through Paryang. Views of Everest, Cho Oyu, Shishapangma, and Makalu along the way. Reach Mansarovar Lake. Pray, explore, and breathe it all in. Visit Rakshastal to the west.

Day 10: Drive Mansarovar to Darchen (40 km, 4,670 m, 1-2 hours) Short transfer. Darchen is the last village before the mountain. This is where the Kora begins.

Day 11: Trek Darchen to Dirapuk (17 km, 5,210 m, 7-8 hours) Drive to Yamdwar, the starting point of the Kailash Kora. The trail climbs through rocky terrain and meadows into Lha Chu Valley. Visit Choku and Dirapuk monasteries—your first clear view of the north face of Kailash.

Day 12: Trek from Dirapuk to Zuthulphuk via Dolma La Pass (22 km, 7-8 hours). The hardest day. You climb to Dolma La Pass at 5,630 m. Then descend past Gauri Kund through Lham Chu Valley to Zuthulphuk.

Day 13: Complete Kora, Drive to Saga (12 km trek, 5 hours drive). The Kora ends at Zongdui. Drive back to Saga.

Day 14: Drive Saga to Kerung (250 km, 2,700 m, 8-9 hours) Return journey to the Nepal-Tibet border.

Day 15: Drive Kerung to Kathmandu (150 km, 1,300 m, 8-9 hours) Same route back. Border formalities handled by our team. Hotel drop-off in Kathmandu. Free evening.

Day 16: Departure Transfer to Tribhuvan International Airport.

What You Need to Know Before Booking Kailash Yatra

These aren't just disclaimers. Some things genuinely affect your experience.

Altitude is serious

The Kailash Mansarovar tour takes you above 5,500 meters. That's not something most bodies are used to. Above 2,500 m, the effects become noticeable. Above 4,000 m, they can become dangerous if you don't take care.

  • Drink at least 2 liters of water every day, plus soups and ginger tea
  • Don't rush. Eat, sleep, hydrate, repeat
  • Our team monitors everyone's health throughout the journey
  • Read our altitude sickness guide before you go

The Kailash Kora (Parikram) is physically demanding

Kailash-Mansarovar-tours-complete-guide

The Kora is 51 km. You walk it in three days, mostly between 4,000 and 5,630 meters. Six to eight hours of walking per day. Rocky, uneven trail with a steep push to Dolma La. If you're not physically prepared, it will hurt.

Start exercising at least 8 to 10 weeks before the trip. Walking uphill with a backpack is the best practice.

The weather is unpredictable.

Even in summer, temperatures can drop below freezing. Pack layers: thermal base, fleece mid-layer, and a down jacket. Rain gear, too. You'll need it.

Facilities are basic past Darchen.

There's no Wi-Fi on the Kora. No hot showers (usually). Food is simple but filling. You'll sleep in basic guesthouses. That's part of it. The environment provides everything else.

Best Time for the Kailash Mansarovar Tour

Kailash-Mansarovar-tours-complete-guide

The tour runs from May to October. That's it. Outside those months, the high-altitude roads and border crossings are shut, and no operator can get you there regardless of how flexible your schedule is.

Within that window, the experience varies quite a bit depending on when you go.

June and August draw the largest crowds. These are the peak pilgrimage months, and the energy around Kailash and Mansarovar during this time is genuinely something else. Pilgrims from India, Nepal, Tibet, and beyond, all moving together with the same intention. If the spiritual atmosphere is what you're after, these months deliver it fully.

May (early) and October are the opposite: fewer people, quieter trails, cooler air. The Kora feels more personal. Some travelers prefer that.

July and September sit somewhere in the middle, moderate crowds and generally decent weather, though July can bring rain on the Nepal side of the route.

Here's a quick breakdown:

  • May (early): Quiet, cool, good for those who want space and solitude
  • June: Peak season, strong pilgrimage energy, busier guesthouses
  • July: Moderate crowd, some rain possible on the Nepal leg
  • August: Another high pilgrimage month, festive and full
  • September: Crowd starts thinning, weather usually still good
  • October: Quietest month, cold sets in toward the end

Holy Kailash Tours offers departures throughout the full season, so we can help you pick the timing that best fits what you're looking for. For a month-by-month breakdown of what to expect on the ground. Read Our More Blogs

The Kailash Yatra Plain Terms

Kailash-Mansarovar-tours-complete-guide

Words don't really capture what Kailash Darshan feels like. We've organised dozens of these trips, and every traveler comes back changed in some way.

It's not easy. The altitude, the walking, the remote terrain, and the basic facilities on the Kora. None of that is for everyone. But if you're drawn to this place, for spiritual reasons or just the sheer experience of it, the difficulty becomes part of the point.

Holy Kailash Tours will handle logistics, permits, safety monitoring, and local knowledge. What you bring is the intention and a bit of physical preparation.

Final Thought

The Kailash Mansarovar tour is not something you do on a whim. You plan it, prepare for it, and then it changes you in ways you didn't expect.

People come for different reasons. Some come as devoted pilgrims who've waited their whole lives for this darshan. Some come for the adventure, the altitude, the sheer physical challenge of the Kora. Some come out of pure curiosity about one of the most mysterious mountains on earth. Whatever brings you here, the mountain doesn't care. It gives everyone the same sky, the same cold, and the same silence.

Holy Kailash Tours, we've watched all kinds of people complete this journey. First-timers who were terrified of the altitude. Older pilgrims who surprised themselves on Dolma La Pass. Solo travelers who ended up bonding with strangers from across the world over a bowl of soup in a guesthouse at 4,600 meters. That's the thing about Kailash. It strips away the noise and leaves something real.

2026 is a rare year. The Horse Year comes once every 12 years, and the spiritual weight it carries for this pilgrimage is something serious pilgrims don't take lightly. One Kora this year carries the merit of 13 in a regular year. If you've been thinking about doing this trip, this is the year to stop thinking and start packing.

We'll take care of everything on the ground: permits, logistics, guides, health monitoring, transportation. You focus on the journey. We'll handle the rest.

Kailash Mansarovar 2026 bookings are open. Spots fill up early, especially in a Horse Year. Don't wait until it's too late.

Kailash Mansarovar Tour FAQs

1. How fit do I need to be for the Kailash Mansarovar tour?

You don't need to be an athlete, but you do need a decent base level of fitness. The Kailash Kora is 51 km over three days, mostly above 4,000 meters, with one very steep climb to Dolma La Pass at 5,630 m. If you can walk 10 to 15 km on a hilly route without stopping every 20 minutes, you're probably in decent shape for it. We recommend starting a walking or cardio routine at least 8 weeks before your departure. Stair climbing and uphill walks with a daypack are the most practical preparation.

2. What is the best time to do the Kailash Mansarovar tour?

The route is open from May to October. Outside those months, the border and high-altitude roads are closed. Each month has a different feel:

  • May and October: Quieter, fewer pilgrims, cooler temperatures
  • June and August: High pilgrimage season, more energy and festivity, busier guesthouses
  • July and September: Moderate crowds, some risk of rain on the Nepal side

For 2026 specifically, we'd suggest booking for May, June, or September to get a good balance of weather, crowd levels, and availability.

3. Is the Kailash Mansarovar tour safe?

Yes, when organized properly. The altitude is the main risk, not the terrain or the political situation. Holy Kailash Tours builds acclimatization days into the itinerary specifically to reduce that risk. Our team monitors health throughout the journey and carries basic medical supplies. That said, anyone with serious heart, lung, or blood pressure conditions should get a doctor's clearance before booking. Age limits apply: travelers must be between 13 and 70 years old.

4. How long does the permit process take?

Allow 20 to 25 days for all permits and the Chinese Group Visa to be processed. This means you should book at least 30 to 45 days before your planned departure. In a Horse Year like 2026, demand is higher than usual, so earlier is better. We handle all the paperwork on your behalf once you've confirmed your booking.

5. Can I do the Kailash Mansarovar tour solo?

No. Independent travel to the Kailash and Mansarovar region is not permitted. You must travel as part of an authorized group with a licensed operator. This is a Chinese government requirement for all foreigners entering Tibet, not just the Kailash area. Holy Kailash Tours organizes group departures throughout the season. If you're a solo traveler, we'll place you with a compatible group.

6. What happens if I get altitude sickness during the tour?

Our team is trained to spot altitude sickness early and respond appropriately. Mild symptoms like headaches, fatigue, and poor sleep are common and manageable with rest, hydration, and medication like Diamox (which we recommend consulting your doctor about before the trip). If symptoms become serious, the protocol is to descend immediately to a lower altitude. We don't push anyone through the Kora if their health is at risk. Your safety always comes first, even if it means adjusting or ending the journey early.

7. What should I pack for the Kailash Mansarovar tour?

Pack for extremes and pack light. You'll carry your daypack on the Kora. Here's what matters most:

  • Thermal base layers (top and bottom)
  • Fleece mid-layer and a down jacket
  • Waterproof outer shell (jacket and pants)
  • Warm hat, gloves, and wool socks (bring extras)
  • Comfortable, broken-in hiking boots with ankle support
  • Sunglasses with UV protection (the glare at altitude is strong)
  • Sunscreen, SPF 50 or higher
  • Personal medications and a basic first aid kit
  • ORS or electrolyte sachets
  • A non-electric hot water bottle for cold nights
  • Photocopies of all documents and extra passport photos

Skip anything heavy or non-essential. A porter or horse can be hired during the Kora for an extra cost if needed, but a well-packed daypack is always better than depending on one.

2026 bookings are open. The Horse Year waits for no one.
