Manthali to Lukla: Alternative Flight Route during Peak Season
Nepal Civil Aviation decided to shift the Lukla flights from Kathmandu to Manthali in 2023. This is to avoid the heavy traffic at Kathmandu airport, and it is also to utilize the short flight window, especially on the Lukla route. The flight time from Manthali Airport to the Tenzing-Hillary Airport, Lukla, is about 15 minutes. By the time the flight reaches Lukla from Kathmandu, the flight can do two rounds from Manthali. Therefore, the alternative route via Manthali Airport is introduced.
It is easier to fly from Manthali, but the road to Manthali is treacherous for travellers. They have to wake up around 1 am or 2 am in the morning and go on the bumpy ride along the BP Highway for about 4 hours. A rough ride of 4 hours may not guarantee a flight will go smoothly without the chance of cancellations.
